He received his Masters Degree from Michigan State University in 1968. He built and managed the Hillsdale Drive-In Theatre until its closing and he also owned and managed several other Theatres in Ohio and Michigan as well as working as a car salesman and selling Packards for many years.
Ambrose started his educational career in 1944 at Lakeview High in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. He taught and coached all sports there for 2 years and was forced to leave education, due to the poor health of his father, and return home and help in the family business.
After a long absence from education for some 12 years, things worked out that let Ambrose return to his “first love” of educating young boys and girls. In 1958 he returned to teaching at Lakeland School in Coldwater and after a short time as 6th grade teacher he was appointed to the Elementary-Junior High Principal-ship (K-8) of that school until 1963, at which time he resigned to accept a job at Hillsdale. He was appointed Principal of the Carl L. Bailey School in the fall of 1963, and served as Principal of that school for 14 years. He was the Principal of Mauck School in Hillsdale for 4 years.
Ambrose has been a charter member and past President of Hillsdale County Elementary Principals’ Association, past President of Area 4 MAESP, past President of Hillsdale Lions Club, past President of Hillsdale County Reading Association, President Elect of Area 3 MAESP, conducted Nuts and Bolts Session at Camp Kett, past President of Lakeland Teachers Association, and past President of M.P.A.T.I. (Airborn T.V. Council). Presently Ambrose is Region 3 representative to the MAESP Leadership Activities Commission, a member of B.P.O.E. 1575, a member of St. Anthony’s Church, past Lecturer and Reader, and was active in organizing Little League Teams in Hillsdale. Ambrose also has a very deep affection for Camp Kett and states that the many things he has learned and friends he has made have carried over into his humanistic practices of proudly being an Elementary School Principal. Ambrose served several years on the Camp Kett Planning Committee.
Ambrose says that, “One of the greatest gifts in the life of an Elementary Principal is to witness the fascinating growth of boys and girls throughout their elementary years.” After more than 20 years of watching this happen, each year takes on a different trend—“That’s what makes our business interesting and worthwhile.”
A funeral mass to honor the life of Mr. Ambrose LoPresto will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Church on Wednesday, April 14th beginning at 11:00 A.M. with Father Tom Butler officiating.
